Even private estates are places that can be used as wedding events. While many people balk at the expenses that can occur through weddings the truth is that celebrity weddings are even more expensive. This comes from how so many things that can occur at a celebrity wedding can be incredibly exorbitant and luxurious. Here is a breakdown of some of the most expensive celebrity weddings in the past.

celebrity wedding cost

One of the most expensive weddings of all time can in 2002 in the wedding between Liza Minelli and David Gest. This wedding cost about three and a half million dollars to pull off. Much of this came from things like the large orchestra that played at the reception and the massive expenses on flowers. In fact it cost forty thousand dollars for the six tier wedding cake to be made for the event. It also cost $150,000 for the five hundred staff members who worked the wedding to be paid. Ironically this marriage ended later in the year.

Another expensive wedding was the three million dollar wedding between Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. In 2002 a large castle was rented out for forty thousand dollars. A massive yacht was rented out at a cost of $19,000 per night and about $150,000 was spent on fireworks for the event. In addition to this a massive reception with a vegetarian catering service and a large series of dancers added to the cost of the wedding.

One wedding that cost two million dollars was the 2006 wedding between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. The TomKat wedding had a massive wine expense bill in that nearly three hundred bottles of wine were consumed during the event. The bottles cost a grand total of $180,000. The clothing for the wedding party was made by Armani and cost more than $150,000 to make.

For one and a half million dollars a wedding ceremony was held for Madonna and Guy Ritchie in 2000. Madonna’s gown alone cost $80,000. Another $800,000 was spent on food with a majority of it going towards the champagne. The rental of an entire castle in Scotland along with the hiring of dozens of security officers added to the cost.

Many smaller things in celebrity weddings can cost a lot as well. For example, in 1999 the wedding rings for the marriage between David Beckham and Victoria Adams were $200,000 in value. The gown that Adams wore during that ceremony was expensive too at $100,000.

Accessories can also be expensive. For example, during her wedding to Michael Douglas in 2005 Catherine Zeta-Jones wore a diamond tiara. This accessory cost three hundred thousand dollars to get.

Even same sex ceremonies have proven to be expensive. A 2005 civil union between Elton John and David Furnish featured diamond wedding bands that were $240,000 in value.

Overall it can be seen that celebrity weddings can be incredibly expensive. These all go to show that famous people are rich and that they can afford all of these unbelievable expenses. Too bad ordinary people aren’t able to do such a thing that easily.

Whilst the cost of a wedding can be extremely intimidating for most couples, and it is easy for celebrity wedding envy to set in, it is worth noting that the amount of money you put in to the big day is no indicator at all of how much you will get out of your marriage. Here are some celebrity couples who are probably regretting the outlay for their nuptials.

celebrity wedding

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren – estimated cost $1.5 million

When Tiger married Swedish model Elin in Barbados, they hired an entire resort at a cost of $200,000 to ensure their privacy. The couple celebrated with a $50,000 firework display.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie – estimated cost $1.5 million

$70,000 was spent on bodyguards alone for this star studded ceremony. Madonna wore an $80,000 Stella McCartney gown for their wedding in a sprawling Scottish castle, along with an antique tiara once worn by Princess Grace of Monaco. They spent $200,000 on fireworks (that’s four times as much as Tiger), and yet for some reason daughter Lourdes led the wedding procession in bare feet.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston – estimated cost $1 million

As the golden couple of Hollywood, this was set to be the wedding of the year, although Brad and Jen were keen to keep it intimate and private and are rumored to have required all staff involved with the event sign a confidentiality agreement. Sadly the wedding, like the subsequent marriage, did not go to plan for the couple, with the cake melting in the heat and the caterers running out of food. They must have underestimated how much Hollywood A-listers eat.

Liza Minelli and David Gest – estimated cost $3.5 million

Estimated to be the most expensive celebrity wedding ever held, this had a wedding party that included Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor, and Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett and Natalie Cole as entertainment (singing with a 60 piece orchestra). The cake alone cost $40,000 and stood six foot tall.

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills – estimated cost $3 million

Paul and Heather married in Ireland in 2002. She wore a dress which the lace for alone cost $10,000, and the guests were treated to an Indian themed reception and a vegetarian feast. As Heather walked down the aisle, a song Paul had penned especially for her on the big day (somewhat unimaginatively titled “Heather”) was played.

If anything, the fact that these marriages all failed after some of the most elaborate weddings in modern history goes to show that it is the couple involved and their love for each other that matters, rather than having a really big firework display.

Weddings are a wonderful occasion and on average cost between $20,000 and $40,000. Celebrity weddings, however, are quite another affair. It is one thing to have a selection of guests you want to have come to your special day and quite another to have the world watching.

Celebrity weddings are the talk of the nation. From the press sealed to the open media, everyone wants to know what they’re wearing, how many guests they have, what they are serving their A-Listed guest list and more… For many celebrity weddings, that $20,000 to $40,000 price range barely covers their deposit on the whole event. Weddings have well exceeded hundreds of thousands and have been recorded into the millions.

While some like to keep it a private affair, there is much interest by the public. Some of the most elaborate weddings consisted of price tags exceeding millions of dollars worth of the formal affair.

Some of the most elaborate weddings recorded are:
Anyone who is old enough to recall the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, recalls the incredible events as the unfolded on our television screens. Stunning and memorable from start to finish. From the incredible music to the processional, it was all amazing.

Some of the price tags recorded for Wedding Gowns:
• Katie Holmes’ “Armani” wedding gown cost $50,000.

• Liza Minelli’s wedding gown cost $45,000, plus she wore a reception gown which cost her $14,000

• Mariah Carey’s “Vera Wang” gown cost $25,000

Some price tags for guests, food, accommodations etc. recorded were:
• Dario Franchiti & Ashley Judd approximately $205,000

• Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston’s Lobster and Champaigne cost approximately $300,000

• Madonna & Guy Ritchie’s wedding frills cost over $800,000

Whether these marriages last or don’t last, we have inquiring minds. We want to know what our favorite celebrities are wearing, eating, or where they are having their honeymoon. Partly it’s the interest of people we admire and partly because many of us wonder what it would be like to be able to have the most perfect wedding ever.

From the gown to the honeymoon there is little expense reserved. These weddings are a global spectacle, whether they want them to be or not. It is a courtesy on the behalf of the public to respect their wishes, yet it is our undying devotion to our favorite stars to know what they do when they are not on the screen. Fantasy or reality, celebrity weddings make us all fascinated and dazzled. A celebrity wedding virtually plays out our own wedding fantasies and desires. Though money doesn’t buy happiness, it does make for a spectacular affair, one that all of us fashion to partake of, whenever possible.
