Because part of being a princess is having people do things for you, 29 top designers offered Kate Middleton their sketches of a fantasy wedding dress.

Kate Middleton's wedding dress

For the most part, designers opted for simple, elegant lines, reflective of the commoner’s down-to-earth poise. Then, of course, there were the haute couture Victorian-contemporary hybrids from Karl Lagerfeld, whose high-neck, bow-bedecked confection was pure high-fashion Disney princess, and Christian Lacroix, who presented a paper-doll rendition of Kate’s face on a patchwork, Elizabethan-inspired ballgown.

While Kate is almost certainly going to work with a British designer on her dress, we loved what some American and European designers had to say about their designs. Prabal Gurung might as well run for office with his statment: “The look is regal with respect for the heritage of the royal family but represents what modern Europe is all about.” Considering, however, it goes along with a characteristically gorgeous, feminine-sleek ballgown style, we imagine (and hope) he’ll stick with fashion design.

Common among the designers is the idea that Kate’s dress will represent the antithesis of Princess Diana’s opulent fairy-tale gown–even that gown’s designer, Elizabeth Emanuel, who, for Kate, presented an intricately detailed, but pared-down number with bracelet sleeves. J. Crew wedding guru Tom Mora, Kimberly Ovitz and Gucci’s Frida Giannini offered up minimalist column dresses at the very end of the simplicity spectrum (all of which, we think, would look sensational with a crown).

If Kate had to pick one from the bunch, our money would be on J. Mendel’s ruffled, but unadorned number, but it’s anyone’s guess. Knowing her, she probably already owns it. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Whispers are abound that Kate Middleton has chosen the designer who will make her wedding dress. Bruce Oldfield, who dressed Princess Diana, is tipped to create the royal wedding gown, at least according to the bookmakers. “We saw this pattern of royal wagers with the venue and the date and they both proved correct,” said a spokesman for Irish bookies, Paddy Power.

“Although we didn’t expect a betting plunge on the dress designer to happen quite so soon, when the stakes changed from fivers and tenners to hundreds of pounds, it appears as though the cat is out of the bag.”

Oldfield has so far declined to confirm, while a spokesperson at Clarence House did say that “no decision has been made.” When the engagement was announced last month, Oldfield told WWD: “If I was lucky enough to be asked, I’d be delighted. I’m already dressing her peers.”

Kate Middleton will marry the future King of England, as Prince William finally popped the question to his longtime girlfriend, giving her his late mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring. All of Britain and many unemployed Americans with nothing better to do look forward to the biggest royal wedding since Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer almost 30 years ago.

Officials announced Tuesday the couple will marry next spring or summer in London. William is second in line to the British throne after Charles, his father. In a TV interview, William said he proposed during a vacation in Kenya last month. “As every guy out there will know, it takes time, a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going,” William said.

“This was my way of making sure that my mother didn’t miss out on today,” William said of Diana’s engagement ring, now on Middleton’s finger, as the couple posed for photographers in the state apartments at St. James’ Palace.

Middleton will be named Queen Catherine if William, as expected, eventually takes the British throne. No word on speculation William would then be known as “King Billy.”

William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and her husband, Prince Philip, “are absolutely delighted for them both,” Buckingham Palace said. Prince Charles said he was “absolutely thrilled.” And in what has to be considering a complete shock, Middleton’s father, Michael, said “We all think he’s wonderful. We’re extremely fond of him. They make a lovely couple.

DOUGLAS’ EX WIFE DENIED: Michael Douglas’ ex-wife has lost a bid to cash in on his earnings from his recent “Wall Street” follow-up.

A Manhattan judge dismissed Diandra Douglas’ lawsuit against the Academy Award-winning actor in a ruling made public Monday. The judge said the dispute doesn’t belong in a New York court because the former couple’s multimillion-dollar divorce agreement was hashed out in Santa Barbara.

Michael Douglas was “very happy” with the New York lawsuit ruling, his lawyer, Marilyn B. Chinitz, said Monday. While it stuck to the question of where the case belongs, not who should win, Chinitz said she was confident the actor would prevail if his ex pursues it further. The couple divorced in 2000 after 23 years together. Diandra Douglas’ lawyer said she plans to appeal. Both Douglases have homes in New York, and “the case should be decided here,” said the lawyer, Nancy Chemtob.

Diandra Douglas’ camp has said she should get half the actor’s earnings from this year’s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” because their divorce deal gives her a share of proceeds from projects related to work he did when they were married, such as the original “Wall Street.”

BLAME CANADA: Randy Quaid and his wife remain fugitives from a California court after the couple failed to appear Tuesday for their arraignment on felony vandalism charges for the fourth time.

Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Donna Geck refused to schedule a new court date for the couple, instead leaving their arrest warrants active. Randy and Evi Quaid already have forfeited more than $1 million in bail for their slew of missed appearances.

Randy Quaid’s attorney, Robert Sanger, said Canadian authorities had confiscated the actor’s passport. The Quaids are seeking asylum there, claiming they fear “Hollywood star-whackers.”

Remember that movie “Independence Day,” in which Quaid claimed to have been abducted by aliens, and generally acted like Otis the town drunk … if Otis were on LSD and watched too much Jerry Springer? Yeah … that sure was some great “acting.”

The Quaids are accused of causing more than $5,000 in damage to the guesthouse of a home they once owned and were allegedly squatting in when they were arrested in September.
